What happens when you fly into St. Louis and have a few hours to explore before heading to a work conference? You hit the ground running! The iconic first stop (if time allows) must be The Gateway Arch followed by some infamous delights – my favorite being pizza and ice cream. Though my time here was short and sweet, I have no doubt I’ll return for more adventures and treats.
The Gateway Arch
Gateway Arch, St. Louis, MO 63102
This has to be one of the coolest experiences you don’t know you need! Walking amongst this towering piece in the grassy field outside is enough to make you weak in the knees. But it’s once you get your ticket inside the national park service building that the adventure really begins. Going to the TOP of the 630 foot monument is quite exciting as it takes a tight fit with a partner or travel companion in a seated elevator-like device they call a tram. Once you get to the top there are limited windows (size is quite small) but you get some amazing views. Unfortunately, I visited in 2012 and don’t have updated photos at this time. Just trust me in that you will have a blast visiting the TALLEST MONUMENT IN THE USA!
Note: Going to the top is not accessible for those with limited mobility as they don’t allow scooters, wheelchairs, or strollers due to the smaller size. There is no seating at the top and they state that you must climb 96 stairs that are divided by 6 flights. Nor are there bathrooms during the 60-minute adventure.
I would suggest buying your tickets to traverse the top of the arch before you arrive, and doing so online. When we went a decade ago, we had to wait quite a while for our turn up the slow tram too and during these times, I feel like the wait would be even longer. Luckily, there are some great displays in the museum to visit while waiting AND a great gift shop!
